River_Basin_District_Map_LIT_8050_75c4b2

The Environment Agency is preparing for the next round river basin management plans. These are the plans that will help England’s waters reach ‘good ecological status’ as defined by the EU. The river basin management plans are an integral part of the European Union’s Water Framework Directive (WFD) and will need to be finalised by 2015.

As part of this the agency has produced draft strategies for each area, and eveidence ‘packs’ that tell you all you need to know about the ecological status and issues affecting your rivers. These are a great way to find out more about your river, but there is also a consultation period, open until 21 September 2013, so you can feed back your thoughts on the draft plans, and your concerns about water quality in your local rivers.

First, find out what river basin you area in by looking at this map.
