A large lawn for sunbathing and picnicking, and a gentle curve in the River Avon for swimming. This is where many older Stratfordians remember learning to swim.

Watch out for boats! It can get very busy with rowers, tourist cruisers, and hired motorboats.

Here the Avon is upstream of the town, shallow and clean. There’s a little beach to get in and out easily (walk just a little way to the right). The river-bed is smooth mud, with a few reeds. Gentle current. It’s shallow, you can stand waist or chest deep all the way across.

There’s a large car park. Look for the sign off the Warwick Road. Some locals call it the ‘Fishermen’s Car Park’.

Highly recommended.

  1. July 2025. The parking is not free now and the payment required is expensive when compared to the marina parking in stratford itself only a 15 min walk away along the river. Signs have been posted which now prohibit swimming

    • A hint by someone who recently moved here. you can park for free in the Clopton area surrounding roads and take a short walk down the Welcolme Hills i.e. 10 minutes downhill to reach the Fisherman’s car park/the old bathing place. Indeed, you could drop people off at the Fisherman’s car park with all the paraphernalia e.g. SUPs, picnic stuff/barbecues… and then collect them, without having to pay.

  2. It’s a shame there is height restriction on the car park, otherwise it would be a good kayak launch point.
