On the south western flank of the Cevennes are the many tributaries of the Gardon. These flow through wild wooded valleys, with steep narrow roads and small isolated villages. Though relatively small, these rivers have some gorgeous swimming spots.
The best pools on the Gardon de Sainte Croix are just above it confluence with the Gardon du Mialet. Follow the D983 to just before Saint Etienne Vallee-Francaise. Over the bridge, park in the car park next to the café. A very short walk upstream brings you to the pools.
