We recently spent a beautiful Saturday afternoon in the July heatwave on this idyllic stretch of river. The river is easily accessible from the common land opposite the pub, upstream of a stone bridge. After crossing the stile, we first came to a fun looking swing, with a large group of local kids having a whale of a time! Walked a bit further along the grassy bank and got changed near the confluence with the river Clun. It wasn’t hugely busy at that point but there were a few families and couples paddling and swimming. The water looked hugely inviting, but was bracing on first entering down the gently sloping gravel bank. We soon warmed up though and enjoyed the escape from the blistering heat. The current was not too strong, but provided noticeable resistance when swimming against it. Swimming downstream towards the bridge we encountered overhanging willows and beautiful sapphire coloured damsel flies. There was also a gentleman paddling in his coracle. We stayed in the water for sometime before picnicking. The whole afternoon had a dreamy timeless quality to it. A wonderful little stretch in which to enjoy something like Betjeman’s “flowering heart of England’s willow-cooled July”. Can’t wait to go back, or to try other stretches of the Teme and Lugg nearby.
