A blue lake forms half of the Sete Cidades lagoon on São Miguel island, Açores. A wild peninsula reaches out into the water which fills the impressive volcanic crater and makes a perfect spot for a skinny-dip. Deserted but for the birds; a path through woodland leads down to gently lapping water.
From N9-1S, turn right before the bridge separating the two lakes and keep left. Park after 500m and walk down.

Don’t swim here! We went to do that but discovered not only are there ecological prohibitions to swimming in any of the lagoons but there is unusual algae that makes it very dangerous to swim. Luckily for us a local passed by just after we got into the water to tell us this – two local people had drowned in the past 2 weeks after getting caught in the algae (which apparently etc gets wrapped round you and can pull you down).
It’s a beautiful spot for a lake-side picnic but swimming not worth the environmental or human risk. You can also rent canoes or SUPs so that’s a better bet for this one.
