Loch Ard

Loch Ard is a wonderful wild swimming spot. It is a freshwater loch about 5km west of Aberfoyle on the road to Stronachlachar. It’s about 5km long in length so great for long distance training.

It’s not too deep, visibility near the bank is good and it’s not as cold as other deeper lochs early in the year. There are a few good entry points, the best two being from parking lay-bys on the main Aberfoyle to Stronachlachar road. The first on the opposite shore to Rob Roy’s cave, just round from Helen’s point. The other being near the water sports centre further up the road.

There is an annual swim festival at Loch Ard organised by Vigour Events, usually in September with a range swim distances.

There are no motor boats on the loch, just canoes and small sailboats. It’s a pretty special swim in wonderful surroundings. I’d recommend a stay in the area, particularly if you also enjoy cycling, walking and trail running.
