Swam it and it is amazing but the local land owner was not to happy for us to be swimming in the lake (thankfully we were just getting out anyway).
The story is that the local youths are having camps and drinks and when one of them got hurt they sued. The land owner had to spend £1000 in defence (the case was dropped before going to court). He has also had to spend money to clean up their mess. (We did a bit of clean up for him from a recent party).
There are no swimming signs and it’s keep out. So you can’t swim the lake but there are other smaller pools in the area (other side of the river) that it appears are okay to swim.
Really beautiful place, if a little tricky to find (when you park you need to head down the slope – you can see a sort of cut out shape in the tree canopy which is where it is). The water was a gorgeous temperature, there were quite a lot of little flies, and little frogs, but generally it was lovely. There are some signs up saying dangerous and you can’t see the bottom from the moment you leave the side, so not a place for people who aren’t confident swimmers, but generally really lovely and worth a visit. There are a number of small streams all around which might be better for the less confident swimmer or younger children.

Beautiful place, however it is deep and murky so make sure you’re a good swimmer. Another trick is to wear a wetsuit, which gives you buoyancy.

This is one of the best places to swim in Devon. It’s beautiful, strangely secluded despite being really accessible, and fun (rope swing!).
