Park in Crown and Anchor pub car park and head north across the bridge turn left on the public footpath which follows the canal. This stretch of the Canal is deep enough to navigate and therefore swim in, slowly flowing out to the River Humber near Cleethorpes. Best to keep to the west of the bridge to avoid anglers and lock gates.

I have been using this part of the Louth canal for a while, it is better to use the Lock nearer the pub as the bank for gaining entry into the Lock is better and firmer here. The water quality is really good and you are not disturbed much if you head away from the Lock gates.
MAC when you say head away from the lock gates are you heading up river towards Louth or towards the sea gates?
