In the summer of 2015, for the first time ever, the West Wight Sports Centre will be organizing not one but two major swimming events to help raise funds for the Centre.

In addition to the annual Wild West Solent Swim, we will be looking for 20 strong swimmers to swim from Alum Bay round the lighthouse and back through the Needles rocks to Alum Bay. In return for the opportunity to take part in this unique and iconic event, swimmers will be asked to put down a deposit of £50 and raise a minimum of £500 in sponsorship for the Sport Centre.

The swim is about 2 miles long and, because of the extreme tidal conditions around the lighthouse and the rocks, can only be attempted safely with accompanying kayaks and support vessels at certain times of the tide. Because of the dangerous conditions, our safety precautions have to be rigorous and we can only accept swimmers who can prove they are fast enough and powerful enough to complete the swim within a certain time.

In order to be considered for a place, applicants must be able to prove that they have completed a cross-Solent swim with either the West Wight Sports Centre or Isle of Wight Samaritans in the last 5 years and have completed a witnessed time trial of 130 lengths of a 25 meter pool. They must also be prepared to take part in a timed sea training session organised by the Sports Centre during the summer and attend the safety briefing the evening before the swim.

The date of the 2015 Needles swim is Sunday 23 August NEEDLES SWIM, starting sometime between 9am and 10am depending on the tide on the day and, in case the weather forces a postponement, the planned backup date is Sunday 6 September.
